Streets

Streets Division is responsible for the design, construction, and maintenance of sidewalks, streets, bridges, and structures for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles. The team includes surveyors, drafters, designers, project coordinators and engineers. The City of Vancouver’s Transportation Plan gives priority (in this order) to pedestrians, bicyclists, transit, goods movement, and then vehicles.

Streets Division goes beyond simply designing streets to efficiently and safely move people and goods. By balancing the needs of all street users, focusing largely on enhancing the public realm, creating a vibrant community experience on the street, the division ensures a more inclusive design that meets the needs of our citizens and visitors. Street trees, wide sidewalks, bike lanes, pedestrian accessibility, and high quality of paving materials and street furniture all contribute to making great streets. The Division also designs streets to minimize environmental impacts, such as reducing stormwater runoff and accommodating sustainable modes of transportation.
