Local Improvements

BeautificationBeautifications

Beautification projects generally involve enhancement or improvement work to a specified area or community.

This process would involve staff working with a committee or business associations wanting specific improvements to enhance local areas or business areas. Through public consultations, conceptual plans are prepared and finalized.

After conceptual plans are adopted by those concerned, the City will formally initiate these improvements. Work will proceed only if a majority of the affected owners support the project and are willing to contribute towards the costs.

Note that BIA's, Business Improvement Areas, have a different process for improvements with the City Planning Department. General information for this process can be acquired by calling 604-871-6304.

Improvement charges

The City may share in the cost of Special Projects as the City may benefit from these enhancements. The amount will vary depending upon the type of improvements and usually is determined as plans are finalized. The cost of any special project is proportioned out to the affected owners and can be paid as a lump sum or on an annual basis for 15 years.

The amount each property owner contributes is based upon the assessable length of their property multiplied by the flat rates listed below. Usually the assessable length is the frontage length of the lot. However, there are lots that are unusual in shape and may be eligible for equitable adjustments. Please refer to assessments for more detail.
