Lighting
The City does not automatically install lighting on streets or in lanes. The installation of street lights or lanes lights on the block are determined by the adjacent owners.
After a request for a petition is received staff would determine the appropriate number of lights and their spacing. Standard lights consist of a 70-80 watt High Pressure Sodium (HPS) bulb, however, specialty lighting may be accommodated at an extra costs and are generally found in business areas.
Furthermore, the City is migrating over to LED (Light Emitting Diodes) lighting. Initially LED lighting would be introduced in lanes (late 2010) and eventually new streets lights will be LED as well.
There are many advantages to LED lighting technology. They are more efficient than the HPS lights. This energy efficiency would reduce the City’s energy costs, reduce the City’s carbon footprint as well as last 3 to 5 times longer than regular HSP lights. For example a 30 watt LED lamp head would be able to provide equivalent lighting normally provided by an 70-80 watt HPS lamp head. We also anticipate the LED lights to be lower in maintenance and that the light provided is more comfortable (natural) instead of the yellow cast seen in other lanes.
Scope of work
- installation of utility poles where required
- installation of conduit
- installation of light heads
Key benefits:
- Illumination of the entire length of the street or lane
- safety feature
Improvement charges
Owners of property adjacent the street or lane are assessed for the installation of lights. The costs for lights can be carried as a lump sum or over a 5 year period for lane lighting or 10 year period for street lighting.
The amount each property owner contributes is based upon the assessable length of their property multiplied by the flat rates listed below. Usually the assessable length is the frontage length of the lot. However, there are lots that are unusual in shape and may be eligible for equitable adjustments. Please refer to assessments for more detail.
