Speed humps

Speed humps are a form of traffic control found on lanes and recently, on streets. Speed humps for lanes usually proceeds as a local improvement project and therefore can be petitioned or if appropriate, initiated by the City.

Speed humps projects for streets are managed by the Neighbourhood Transportation Branch. They review and rate streets of concern and where appropriate install speed humps at no costs to the adjacent owners. To contact Neighbourhood Transportation call 604-873-7130.

Speed humps are usually requested because concerned owners are experiencing either speeding problems in lanes, higher than normal volumes of traffic or a combination of both from local or transient vehicles.

Speed humps are generally located approximately 100ft (30m) from the lane entrance and spaced evenly anywhere from 120 ft. to 160 ft. apart for the length of the lane. Where ever possible speed humps will be located away from driveways or garage entrances, however, owners should be aware there are situations where a speed hump may encroach in front of their parking area.

Speed humps are usually petitioned or the City can initiate under certain conditions. Cost for this work can be carried over a 15 year period.

Improvement charges

Owners adjacent the affected lane are assessed for the entire cost of the construction of the speed humps. The City does not contribute to this type of project. The costs for speed hump improvement projects can be paid in a lump sum or carried over a 15 year period.

The amount each property owner contributes is based upon the assessable length of their property multiplied by the flat rates listed below. Usually the assessable length is the frontage length of the lot. However, there are lots that are unusual in shape and may be eligible for equitable adjustments.
