Knight Street and 57th Avenue

Making your streets safer
Improvements to Knight Street and 57th Avenue

Upgrades to your streets

This summer, major roadwork will begin on Knight Street (between 54th and 61st) in coordination with some changes to traffic lanes on 57th Avenue (between Fleming and Knight). This roadwork is scheduled to start in July and is expected to be completed in December 2011.

Visit Road Ahead for up-to-date roadwork information.

Why is this work being done?

Collision RatesKnight Street
Knight Street is a major transportation route and key connection between Vancouver, Richmond, Delta, Surrey and the United States. As a busy route used by residents, commuters and commercial truck drivers, the Clark-Knight Corridor has the highest frequency of intersection collisions in Vancouver.

Left-turn bays are being added at Knight and 57th and the ‘S’ curve between 54th and 57th Avenues will be widened to reduce collisions. After left-turn bays were installed on six other high-collision intersections, left-turn collision rates dropped by 50 to 80 per cent.

The installation of new left-turn bays on Knight and 57th, in conjunction with the removal of the existing left-turn restrictions (7 am to 7 pm, Monday to Saturday), will allow a safer environment for drivers to turn left onto 57th.

Planting trees and widening the sidewalks will also create a safer, more pleasant walking environment along Knight.

57th Avenue
57th Avenue connects to the Clark-Knight corridor and the adjacent neighbourhoods. Residents have identified safety concerns related to traffic volumes in back lanes and on side streets. During the rush hour, drivers are shortcutting on local streets and lanes because they are unwilling to wait at the long left-turn queues on 57th westbound to turn left onto Knight.

Traffic calming measures, such as speed humps on 61st and 59th Avenues, Ross Street, Prince Albert Street and Borden Street, and traffic circles on Inverness Street, have been constructed to address some of the shortcutting issues, but the behaviour continues. By adding an extra left-turn bay, it will encourage left turns where it is the safest.

What's New

What's New?

New left-turn bays

  • A double left-turn bay on 57th Avenue (westbound) onto Knight Street
  • Two left-turn bays on Knight Street (north and south) onto 57th Avenue

Widening of traffic lanes on Knight Street

  • Knight Street traffic lanes will be widened between 54th and 59th Avenues

Trees on Knight Street

  • Trees planted between the sidewalk and roadway, and along the median on Knight Street

New lighting on Knight Street

  • Existing lighting replaced with new energy efficient LED lighting

What to expect during construction

From July to December, traffic will be affected on both 57th and Knight. You may experience traffic delays, road closures and traffic congestion.

On Knight, between 54th and 59th, two lanes in each direction will be maintained whenever possible. There may be additional lane closures during July and August when volumes are typically lower.

During construction, left-turns from Knight onto 57th will be restricted between 7 am and 7 pm.

During roadwork, electronic traffic billboards will be situated along routes leading into the area, providing notice to drivers to use alternate routes. For up-to-date roadwork information, please visit app.vancouver.ca/roadahead_net or call 311.
