Traffic Management: Traffic Counts

The City executes automatic and manual counts on streets in order to determine traffic volumes. Data from these counts is used to help make important traffic management decisions.

Automated Counts

Automated Traffic CountsAutomatic counts are conducted by placing hoses on the roadway, usually for a 24-hour period, and recording the number of vehicles traveling in a specific direction. The counts are done mid-block between two intersections to give a total for each direction of the street. View an example of the Automated Count information available.

Manual Counts

Manual counts are conducted at signalized intersections by Traffic Assistants during the morning and afternoon rush hours using an electronic count board. Information is collected for all vehicular, pedestrian and bicycle movements at the intersection (left and right turns and through movements in every lane). Traffic countsBoth automated and manual traffic counts can be obtained through VanMap.
