Lawn and Garden Care

On household lawns and gardens, homeowners are encouraged to try natural alternatives to chemical fertilizers and pesticides and apply no more than the recommended amounts. Natural predators like insects and bats, composting, and use of native plants can reduce or entirely eliminate the need for chemicals.

Urban and suburban landscapes are often covered with paved surfaces such as sidewalks, parking lots and driveways. These surfaces are known as impervious, acting to prevent water from percolating into the ground and being filtered by natural processes. Instead, runoff is accumulated and must be directed into the City sewer system via storm drains. Homeowners are encouraged to incorporate a system of natural grasses, trees and mulch in and around their yards to limit impervious surface area. When landscaping and planting, the use of native plant species over non native species is encouraged as they are more suited to the regions climate and pests. This will help to reduce the need for chemical application and extra watering to sustain the plants. For more information, visit Grow Natural.
