Water Valves
If a resident notices that covers (or some of the other items listed below) are missing or damaged they can call
to report this concern. The City will send a crew to investigate. When a crew comes out will depend on the severity of the problem. For example, if a cover or lid is missing and located in the middle of the sidewalk or road, a crew will be sent out as soon as possible (including outside business hours) as this is a safety concern.
Some miscellaneous items that get reported are:
Valve boxes and lids
These valve boxes have square lids and are located on roads, sidewalks and boulevards. If the box is in line with a hydrant then it is a hydrant control valve box. Missing, damaged or rattling lids require a City crew to come out and adjust them. Leaking valves should also be reported to
.
If it is an issue with a round manhole lid please report this to Sewers Operations.
Service shut off valve cover (cap)
Water service shut off valve covers (caps) can get broken or go missing. Please report these situations and Waterworks will have them replaced.
There is no charge for Waterworks crews to adjust tile and tops for a homeowner or request a new metal cap. There is no need for the homeowner to be home when the crew performs these services. These are low priority jobs and are attended to as time permits. These services do not affect the homeowner's water service.
Valve Status
The City has numerous large valves that are located at intersections and are used to be able to shut down a portion of a watermain in case repairs are required. This allows the system to be isolated and repairs can be undertaken in the least disruptive manner. Waterworks keeps track of which valves are open and closed at any given time.
Valve Maintenance
The City maintains an inventory of large and small gate valves, butterfly valves, and air relief valves. Valve maintenance involves the inspection, exercising and servicing of valves in the citywide distribution system. The inspection schedules range depending on the type of valve. These valves are exercised regularly to make sure they are operable at all time.
Valve Replacement Program
Valves are typically replaced in conjunction with watermain, service or hydrant replacement jobs.
Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV) Stations
The City operates a number of PRV stations. The stations follow a regular maintenance program and are upgraded or replaced based on a calculated replacement schedule.
