NEPP Workshop #2: Emergency Preparedness for You and Your Pet
NEPP Workshops
Location: Dunbar Community Centre - 4747 Dunbar Street
We have all witnessed the recent earthquakes in Japan, New Zealand, Haiti and Chile and have seen first hand the devastation caused by these earthquakes. Living in Vancouver, we too could be faced with a major earthquake, yet few of us take the necessary steps to ensure our families are prepared. The key to better surviving a disaster is to ensure you and your family are prepared before the disaster strikes. But what about pets? We saw in Hurricane Katrina that people refused to evacuate if they were not able to take their pets with them. Don't let this happen to you. This session will cover the supplies you should have on hand, how to make your home safe, what to do if you are evacuated and other key steps in developing your family and pet emergency plan.

Michele Landsberg
Library Events - VPL
Location: Central Library, 350 W. Georgia St., Alice Mackay Room, Lower Level
One of the most respected voices in Canadian feminism, two-time National Newspaper Award-winning journalist Michele Landsberg reads from her new volume "Writing the Revolution." For 25 years, between 1978 and 2005, Landsberg wrote a highly influential column in the Toronto Star, recording and interpreting history from the front lines of the feminist movement. In Writing the Revolution she brings us a collection of her favourite columns. With her trademark blend of kindness, toughness, bluntness and humour, she reflects on when she was right and when she was wrong, what was happening behind the scenes and what has happened since. Looking back over the years Landsberg ponders the present and future of feminism.

Tim Ward
Library Events - VPL
Location: Central Library, 350 W. Georgia St., Alice MacKay Room, Lower Level
Tim Ward reads from his illuminating personal story "Zombies on Kilimanjaro: A Father-Son Journey Above the Clouds." On a journey to the Roof of Africa, Tim and his 20-year-old son traverse the treacherous terrain of divorce, rebellion, dark secrets and old grudges, as they forge an authentic adult relationship. Trekking up the volcano, they explore how our stories about ourselves can imprison us in the past, and the necessity of letting go. The final all-night climb to the frozen summit becomes a rite of passage, as oxygen-deprivation turns them into shuffling, brain-dead zombies. The mountain too has a story to tell, a story about climate change and the future of humankind: a future clearly etched on Kilimanjaros retreating glaciers.

Maximum Tolerated Dose: Film Screening
Library Events - VPL
Location: Central Library, 350 W. Georgia St., Alice MacKay Room
Please join us for a screening of the new documentary by Decipher Films and Karol Orzechowski. "Maximum Tolerated Dose" charts the lives of both humans and non-humans who have experienced animal testing first-hand. With hauntingly honest testimony by scientists and lab technicians whose ethics demanded they choose a different path, and the simultaneously heartwarming and heartbreaking stories of animals who have seen both sides of the cage, the film aims to re-invigorate the debate about animal testing by bringing these rarely-heard perspectives to the fore.
