Mayor Robertson carries Olympic flame onto Canadian soil - October 30, 2009

Mayor bringing flameThe Olympic Flame arrived in Canada on Friday, October 30 with Mayor Robertson carrying the flame off the plane in Victoria to be the first to bring it onto Canadian soil.

Following the touchdown of the Canadian Forces plane carrying the Olympic delegation and the flame, Mayor Robertson told the Victoria welcoming crowd the flame will light the path to a wonderful celebration in February.

Mayor with flame lit“The Olympic torch relay will ignite excitement in every corner of our country,” Mayor Robertson said. “From the First Nations community of Old Crow in the northern Yukon to Corner Brook in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canadians will light the path to BC Place where, on February 12, 2010, the cauldron for the XXI Olympic Winter Games and the X Paralympic Winter Games will burn bright.”

“As Mayor of the Host City, I am delighted that the hands of Canadians will carry this flame on an historic journey that will end in Vancouver,” Mayor Robertson added. "The torch is the beacon of the Games. It represents the Olympic message of peace and friendship and we look forward to welcoming it to Vancouver in 2010.”
