On March 25, the coalition presented a day-long event to bring together various groups and individuals to focus on creating a culture of prevention in Vancouver. Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson opened the event, which featured the following speakers: Chris Kelly, Superintendent, Vancouver Board of Education,
Nadia Chaney, poet, musician, arts engagement specialist and multi media artist,
Dr. Anthony Hutchinson, CEO, Brampton Neighbourhood Resource Centre, Ontario,
Chelseah, a youth presenter and
Dr. Gabor Maté, staff physician, Portland Hotel in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

Mayor Gregor Robertson delivered the opening welcome to participants.
The panel discussion, “What does prevention mean” , included Chris Kelly, Superintendent, Vancouver Board of Education; Nadia Chaney, poet, musician, arts engagement specialist and multi media artist; Dr. Anthony Hutchinson, CEO, Brampton Neighbourhood Resource Centre, Ontario; Chelseah, a youth presenter and members of the audience.
The panel discussion, “Why are we here today?”, was kicked off by Zarina Mulla, Drug Policy Planner, City of Vancouver; Michelle Fortin, Executive Director, Watari Research Association; Bob Manning, Coordinator, Alcohol and Drug Counselling Program,Urban Native Youth Association; and Art Steinman, Coordinator, School-Age Children and Youth substance abuse prevention program. The panelists led an interactive discussion with the audience.
Nadia Chaney started the afternoon’s proceedings with a recitation of three vibrant poems she wrote in her teens and early 20s.
Dr. Gabor Maté ) was the final speaker and delivered a passionate, evidence-based plea for prevention that begins with each child’s conception.
