Supervised Injection Site (SIS):
Vancouver's SIS was opened in 2003, as part of the harm reduction efforts under the City's Four Pillars Drug Strategy. The site provides injection drug users with a clean facility, sterile injecting equipment and access to healthcare staff.

North American Opiate Medication Initiative (NAOMI):
NAOMI is a clinical trail that started in February, 2005 in Vancouver and June, 2005 in Montreal. Participants were randomly assigned to groups receiving oral methadone treatment, heroin or hydromorphone, which is pharmacologically similar to heroin.
