Beautifying the Downtown Eastside (DTES)
From Grey to Green: Main Street Lane Improvement
The laneway between Hastings and Cordova Streets was known as one of the most dangerous in the city. On any given day, you could see open drug trafficking and drug use, public urination and defecation, prostitution and loitering. The laneway was a concern for the legitimate and viable businesses and organisations on Main Street who used it to enter their facilities.
The ‘Grey to Green’ project was designed to engage Main Street businesses,
organisations and local residents who use the lane for illegal activities in a project to improve the lane’s condition. Now, the laneway has an ‘art fence’ with various sized paintings that fall under a “living here’ theme. Ten artists’ work is featured on the art fence. The work was unveiled at an event held in December 2010.
