Blood Alley Community Greening Project
This project engaged The Environmental Youth Alliance, who facilitated a community-based gardening and cultural project in Gastown’s Blood Alley. The project engaged local residents, businesses, and other community members in a greening project to increase pride in this important public space and to foster its continued upkeep. Workshops with community members identified the following elements of the greening project: design and installation of planters for the Stanley-New Fountain hotel balcony, construction of community garbage bins, improvements to the plantings in existing planters, and the installation of community made totem carvings. Phase 1 of the project began in the Fall of 2008 and was completed in November 2009, phase 2, which involves the installation of a living wall, a new planter, and improvements to existing planters is currently in progress.
