Megaphone Magazine: Community Outreach and Capacity Building
This project focuses on giving homeless and low income individuals an opportunity to have their stories published and voices heard across the city. Since July 2010, there have been 94 participants in three weekly writing workshops. Workshops occur weekly and last for one hour.
The project has realized many successes. One long-time Downtown Eastside resident with serious health complications who had been trying to get his poetry published with no success for ten years has had four poems published since being introduced to Megaphone. The experience has opened other publishing doors to him and he will have a poem published in the upcoming Poetry is Dead magazine.
The workshops and subsequent publishing has given participants a sense of accomplishment and validation.
