Chinatown Yue Shan Courtyard Revitalization
Upgrades at the Chinatown Yue Shan Courtyard activated the Yue Shan Society courtyard and historic Market Alley and provided a new
space for public programming in Chinatown. This project included upgrading the Yue Shan Courtyard, a portion of the building facing the courtyard and historic Market Alley, including cleaning, painting and improved lighting. The renovated courtyard allowed public programming by cultural organizations, youth groups and others.
A temporary lighting and art exhibition called “Bright Lights” took place in the neighbourhood during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Public spaces in the neighbourhood were linked. Upgrades to the courtyard leveraged renovations to a commercial unit facing Market Alley, making future alley revival possible. The commercial space is being rented at below-market rates to a local artist to further foster cultural activities and inter-generational programming.
