HomeGround (2009 and 2010)
HomeGrown tent
The 2009 HomeGround was a three day pilot event in preparation for a larger event in 2010. Carnegie Community Centre, the DTES Neighbourhood House and associate community groups worked together to provide the event. HomeGround is held at Oppenheimer Park and consists of tents with seating and art work, haircutting, physical services (including foot care, manicures and pedicures), entertainment, and meals. Outreach teams connected with the homeless by finding them shelter for the night and then by continuing to work with them over the long term. These connections to treatment centres, housing, and health services remain a festival legacy that reaches beyond the duration of the festival itself.
Success of the pilot HomeGround 2009 is informing the planning and preparation of 2010 events to be held in February 2010. Homeground 2010 will consist of a three day tented event, pre-event community workshops, and will offer enhanced programming and food services at Oppenheimer Park. The event will provide a safe place for residents likely to be pressured by surrounding Olympic activity, while at the same time celebrating and encouraging local talent and engagement in the community.
