Diversity

Vancouver has an exceptionally diverse population. Half of our citizens come from somewhere else, and nearly half speak a language other than English at home. That blend of cultures, attitudes and ideas contributes to the creative and innovative character of the city.

Woodward's The City is commited to social inclusion, and it extends to our community-building efforts in the Downtown Eastside. The Woodward’s Project is the most dramatic example: a unique combination of social housing, market condominiums, commercial and retail space, government offices, and non-profit organizations.

The City's biggest challenge is to support and engage people on the margins of society, which calls for innovative efforts like the Four Pillars Drug Strategy, Clean Streets Project, and Vancouver Police Department’s Diversity and Aboriginal Policing Section.

Vancouver sees its diversity, both cultural and socio-economic, as a source of strength, resilience and creative energy. Achieving social as well as environmental sustainability is essential to its future as a Green Capital.
