Green building, renovating, and landscaping resources

To help reduce the city's greenhouse gas emissions by 33% by 2020, Council requires that your home renovation projects include green design and efficient energy updates.

We have developed a number of resources, including green home renovation guides, that will help you incorporate sustainability features into your home renovation project, and create a home that:

  • Is healthy
  • Is easy on the environment
  • Saves you money

Green home renovation guides

The City will soon revise the Vancouver building bylaw to include new sustainability requirements for all home renovations.

To help you start thinking green now, we have produced a series of green renovation guides.

The Green Home Renovation Guide series covers common remodeling topics, giving helpful hints on materials and strategies to create a home that's healthy, saves money, and is easy on the environment.

Waterwise landscape guidelines

Many urban landscapes require large amounts of water, chemicals, and ongoing maintenance to look their best.

At the same time, these landscapes often have large, unplanted surfaces that do not absorb water (such as concrete sidewalks).

These landscapes put a strain on the city's drainage infrastructure, threaten the quality and availability of our water, and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.
