Buy or manage a dog licence

Sad looking puppy

Dogs 3 months or older (including service dogs) must have a licence, according to the Animal Control Bylaw.

Benefits of having your dog licensed

Thanks in part to the money raised through licensing fees, the City is able to care for lost and stray pets, and pay for education- and pet-adoption services. With a dog licence, you:

  • Have a much better chance of getting your dog returned if it gets lost
  • Avoid the impound fee if the City picks up your lost dog (one "ride home free" per year)
  • Have your dog added to the Emergency Pet Registry, so emergency responders will know to look for it in the event of a disaster
  • Avoid getting an "unlicensed dog" ticket ($250.00 for each infraction)

Buy or renew your dog licence

A dog licence costs $39.00 per year (no tax) and is valid for one year from the date of payment. When your licence expires and you need to renew, please do so on time to avoid a $10.00 late penalty.

Residents of the Musqueam Indian Reserve and the University Endowment Lands can only buy a dog licence in person or by phone.
