Career development
The City of Vancouver is extremely proud of its commitment to career development. We approach learning as a partnership between the organization, our managers and our employees.
Our role as an organization is to create a climate of learning where employees are supported to increase their knowledge, skills and abilities to enable career development and to improve service delivery to our customers – the residents, visitors and business community of Vancouver.
While advancing in their careers, employees have unique development needs. Our managers therefore encourage all staff to attend approved internal and external learning opportunities to maximise their potential.
Central to our career development initiatives is the City's in-house training calendar - CityLearn - which offers over 100 training courses. With an extensive course selection, we rival the programs provided by many University and College Continuing Education Departments. CityLearn offers courses on:
- Business Essentials
- Communication Skills
- Developing Yourself
- Instructor Development
- Leading, Managing & Supervising
- The City Management Program
- Working with Others
- Diversity & Respectful Workplaces
- Health & Safety
- SAP Training and more…
The calibre of our training programs has enabled us to partner with a number of educational institutions and other organizations. Accreditation for completion of a selection of courses offered through CityLearn is provided by: The Justice Institute; UBC-Sauder School of Business; The Canadian Management Centre; Royal Roads University; Capilano College; Vancouver Community College; Leadership Vancouver and The Local Government Management Association.
To better prepare our employees for success in their current jobs and to prepare them for future opportunities and advancement, the city also provides: apprenticeships; technical skills training; coaching; mentoring and offers career planning services and training sessions to employees across the organization.
Staff who meet eligibility requirements are able to apply for financial reimbursement and leaves of absences to attend external learning, education and professional development events on their own. In addition, there is the possibility of being sent to attend such events by the city.
There are many opportunities for career development at the City of Vancouver. Come and see if there is a career waiting for you.
