Fit City
Fit City is our employee initiated, developed and promoted program. Supported by our Corporate Management Team since its inception in 1987, Fit City facilitates the education and motivation of all City employees to lead healthy and active lifestyles.
How does Fit City accomplish this goal? Through sport and fitness opportunities, health screening, lunch hour lectures and workshops, discounts on fitness facilities, special events, plus a comprehensive incentive program. Monthly newsletters and a website featuring health and fitness information are also a regular feature of our program.
Sport and Fitness Opportunities
Fit City helps organize sport and fitness opportunities for City employees. Programs such as Chi Kung, Yoga and Pilates are held in the City Hall area, and at other worksites on demand. School Board gyms can be rented for evening programs such as volleyball, which are open to all employees. All these programs are run on a cost recovery basis, so new programs are considered as long as sufficient interest is shown.
Health Screening
Hearts@Work Health Fairs are held at City locations on a regular basis. At these events employees can assess their risk of heart disease through cholesterol, blood pressure and diabetes screening, and counseling on nutrition, body composition, smoking cessation and coping with stress.
Lunch Lectures and Workshops
Health and fitness information is also made available to employees via lunch lectures and workshops. The topics are chosen based on feedback from employees, and/or to tie in with events such as Heart Month. Fit City has a listing of resource people on various topics for those interested in offering their own lunch lectures or workshops and also help with promotion and organization.
Discounts on Fitness Facilities/Goods & Services
Fit City has organized group discounts at various facilities such as: Vancouver Park Board Fitness Centres & Pools, the South Slope Family YMCA, the YWCA and Fitness World.
Special Events
Special events help foster good morale and interdepartmental relations, and also provide health and fitness education. Some examples of annual events are Health Fairs, Nutrition Month lunches, and the Move for Health Day Walk.
The Fit City Newsletter / Website
Distributed monthly the newsletter consists of health & fitness information, a heart-healthy recipe, regular columns featuring employee's health & fitness achievements, environmental health issues, further resources and an event calendar. The Fit City website, located on the internal employee website, features everything from the newsletter and more.
