City of Vancouver Awards of Excellence honour outstanding community leaders and organizations

"Vancouver is one of the best cities in the world to call home thanks to the remarkable contributions of our community leaders," said Mayor Gregor Robertson.

Awards of excellence

The winners of the 2016 City of Vancouver Awards of Excellence were announced on Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at an evening celebration hosted by Mayor Gregor Robertson and members of Vancouver City Council.

"Vancouver is one of the best cities in the world to call home thanks to the remarkable contributions of our community leaders," said Mayor Gregor Robertson. "The Awards of Excellence are an opportunity to celebrate the outstanding achievements of those who live and work in our city, and I'd like to congratulate and thank all of tonight's honourees for their commitment to making Vancouver an even greener, healthier, more diverse, and accessible city."

About the Awards of Excellence

The Awards of Excellence celebrate those who make Vancouver a greener, healthier, more diverse, accessible, and prosperous city. The recipients of the awards were nominated by the public and confirmed by City Council.

Winners of the 2016 Vancouver Awards of Excellence

Civic Merit Award

The Civic Merit Award recognizes individuals for outstanding achievement in a particular field of endeavour in sports, science, arts, or culture within the city and the province, or in recognition of a specific service. City Council must vote unanimously to honour someone with the Civic Merit Award.

  • Karen O'Shannacery: dedicated herself for more than four decades as a housing advocate for homeless and low income residents, working to find solutions and provide support for people living in the Downtown Eastside. Ms. O'Shannacery was a founder of the Lookout Emergency Aid Society and has also served on many committees, boards and organizations including being a long-standing member of the Metro Vancouver's Regional Steering Committee on Homelessness.
  • Ron Suzuki: was the Recreation Programmer for the Strathcona Community Centre among several other community centres throughout his 40 year career with the Park Board. Mr. Suzuki has been a tireless advocate for children and equity in Vancouver's low income communities, and continues to contribute his time and energy to this community into retirement.

Mayor's Achievement Award

The Mayor's Achievement Award recognizes remarkable dedication and significant contributions towards improving the quality of life for the citizens of Vancouver. The recipients of this award are selected personally by Mayor Gregor Robertson.

  • Organization: Tradeworks Training Society
  • Individual: Janine Fuller
  • Youth: Austin Wang

Accessible City

The Accessible City Award honours outstanding leadership to enhance accessibility, inclusion, and elimination of barriers to full participation for persons with disabilities.

  • Organization: Centre for Accessible Post-secondary Education Resources BC (CAPER-BC)
  • Individual: Peggy Assinck
  • Youth: Sarah Fletcher

Civic Volunteer

The Civic Volunteer Award recognizes outstanding volunteer contributions to a City of Vancouver Board or Committee, or to an organization that receives City funding.

  • Organization: Vancouver Emergency Communications Telecommunications Organization (VECTOR)
  • Individual: Rob Haynes
  • Youth: Nicole Hou

Diversity and Inclusion

The Diversity and Inclusion Award celebrates outstanding leadership to foster inclusion across diverse communities.

  • Organization: Pacific Immigrant Resources Society (PIRS)
  • Individual: David Ng
  • Youth: Golsa Golestaneh

Greenest City Leadership

The Greenest City Leadership Award recognizes individuals or groups who enhance or advance the City's Greenest City Action Plan goals.

  • Organization: Trout Lake Youth Council
  • Individual: Doug Wilson
  • Youth: Kimberley Wong

Healthy City for All

The Healthy City for All Award pays tribute to outstanding leadership, by an individual or organization, in working towards creating a healthier city.

  • Organization: Megaphone Magazine
  • Individual: Chris Taulu
