Burrard Corridor construction impacts for April

Burrard Bridge

Coordinated work continues along Burrard St. from Davie St.to 16th Ave. to replace aging water, sewer and road infrastructure, improve safety for all modes at the Burrard-Pacific intersection, and provide needed structural rehabilitation for Burrard Bridge.

Key facts for Burrard Corridor construction

  • Duration: Construction is ongoing from Davie St. to 16th ave. until late 2017
  • North of bridge: At least one travel lane in each direction will stay open on Burrard St.
  • South of bridge: Some full road closures on weekends to allow for major roadwork and final paving
  • Bridge access: Cyclist, pedestrian, and vehicle access available throughout construction


Update on Burrard Corridor work: April – May 2016

Burrard St. – Davie to Pacific

We are replacing the water main, installing a larger storm sewer main, and initiating pedestrian and cycling improvements on Burrard St.from Davie to Beach in 2016.

April traffic impacts

  • Traffic impacts this month will be near the intersection of Burrard and Pacific

Burrard and Pacific Intersection

In April, we will be installing a temporary traffic signal at Burrard and Pacific, and will start electrical works related to the permanent traffic signal. Work at this intersection will be ongoing for majority of 2016.

April traffic impacts

  • Temporary closure of one of the two existing southbound lanes on Burrard St.at Pacific
  • Temporary closure of one of the two existing northbound lanes on Burrard St. at Pacific
  • Temporary closure of one of the through lanes on Pacific St. at Burrard St.

High impact work will occur some weekends

Pacific St. – Thurlow to Burrard

In April, we will complete minor storm sewer works on Pacific St. between Burrard and Thurlow.

  • Temporary closure of one of the two existing southbound lanes on Burrard Street at Pacific
  • Temporary closure of one through lane on Pacific Street between Thurlow and Burrard.

Beach Ave. at Burrard Bridge

We will start construction of the replacement storm sewer in late April or early May. 

April traffic impacts

  • Partial closure of the laneway north of Beach Ave. for up to four months.
  • Access to homes and businesses will be maintained.

Burrard Bridge

Burrard Bridge will remain fully open to traffic in April. Work will begin on the underside of the bridge in mid-April. Traffic impacts on the bridge are expected to begin on the bridge in mid-May, with 5 vehicle lanes being reduced to 3 vehicle lanes.

  • Bridge will remain open to traffic

Burrard St. – Cornwall to 17th Ave.

We are updating critical infrastructure at the south end of Burrard Bridge, including replacing the water main, installing a separated sewer main, upgrading portions of sidewalk, and repaving the road surface on Burrard Street from Cornwall Avenue to 17th Avenue in 2016 and 2017.

April - May traffic impacts

  • Sections of Burrard Street reduced to two lanes, of six
  • No full closures in April
  • Full closure from 10th Ave. to 16th Ave. starting May, continuing to October

Work focus in April and May

  • 1st Ave. to Broadway: Water main installation work started at 1st Avenue on March 17, 2016 and is moving south towards Broadway. Lanes on Burrard between 1st Avenue and Broadway will be reduced to four lanes (out of six lanes). Construction work will move block-by-block, spending approximately three and a half weeks on each block.
  • 8th Ave. to Broadway: Sewer work started at the lane north of Broadway on Burrard on March 14, 2016. Lanes on Burrard between 8th Avenue and Broadway will be reduced to two lanes (out of six lanes). Work will continue until mid-June.
  • Broadway to lane south of Broadway: Sewer work will start lane south of Broadway in the 1st week of April. Lanes on Burrard between Broadway and the lane will be reduced to two lanes (out of 5 lanes). Work will continue until mid-June.
  • 8th Ave., Pine to Burrard: Sewer work on 8th Ave between Pine Street and Burrard Street is expected to be complete by April 14.

Traffic circle installed on Pine and 8th Ave. Intersection opened for traffic.
