Celebrate Vancouver’s Olympic legacy during Sochi 2014 Winter Games

Red and white are the colours of the day at Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic legacy facilities and other select Park Board community centres and ice rinks during the Sochi 2014 Winter Games.

Events at Community Centres and ice rinks

Creekside Community Recreation Centre

Creekside Community Recreation Centre is holding a Winter Games legacy celebration Sunday, February 9 from 12:30pm to 2:30pm. The centre is a Vancouver 2010 Olympic legacy, having served as the administrative and commercial hub of the Athletes Village.

Creekside celebration activities:

  • An opening parade
  • Autograph station with Gold Medalist Ashleigh McIvor
  • West Coast Lumberjack Show
  • Meet and greet with the blue jacket volunteers
  • Extreme snowboarding simulator
  • Toddler rink, and toddler and children’s hockey by Vancouver Sportball
  • Caricatures, button making, face painting, and photo station 
  • Live entertainment, Olympic memorabilia, pin trading, and door prizes
  • ‘Canada House’ and ‘Russia House’ cultural themed crafts, cookie decorating, maple syrup pops, and flag making

Blue jacket volunteers interested in participating in the opening parade should call 604-257-3050 to register.

Hillcrest, Kerrisdale, Killarney, Kitsilano, Sunset, Trout Lake, and West End ice rinks

‘Paint the town red’ at Hillcrest, Kerrisdale, Killarney, Kitsilano, Sunset, Trout Lake, and West End ice rinks, at regularly scheduled public skates during the Olympic opening weekend February 7 to 9. Skaters can fly the flag, wear red, or paint their face red to be entered into a draw to win a Team Canada hockey jersey. 

Trout Lake and Killarney ice rinks are Vancouver 2010 Olympic legacies. Trout Lake was a training venue for figure skating, and Killarney was a training venue for short-track speed skating.

Kerrisdale Community Centre

At Kerrisdale Community Centre the big screen TV in the Games Room (main floor) will be set to the Sochi 2014 Winter Games. During regular operating hours everyone is welcome to come by and cheer on the athletes. For details contact the community centre at 604-257-8100.

Olympic themed Family Day (Monday, February 10) events at community centres

Hillcrest Centre

Hillcrest Centre will be celebrating with mini Olympic Games for families to play, crafts, sport activities, entertainment and more. The event runs from 11:00am to 2:00pm on Monday, February 10 and costs $2.00 per child. Pre-registration is required. Hillcrest Centre is a Vancouver 2010 Olympic legacy. This venue hosted competition curling and wheelchair curling events.

Killarney Community Centre

Killarney Community Centre will host a variety of Family Day activities, including Family Gym from 1:30pm to 4:00pm on Monday, February 10 (admission by food donation) with Olympic themed crafts and games. Pre-registration is required.

About the Sochi 2014 Winter Games

The Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games run from February 7 to 23, and the Paralympic Winter Games run from March 7 to 16. Canada’s elite winter athletes will be riding a wave of momentum into the Games following great successes four years ago in Vancouver.
