Today we released our mid-point update on the ambitious Greenest City 2020 Action Plan, including next steps towards Vancouver’s goal to shift to 100% renewable energy.

We are also launching Bright Green Summer, a series of events and engagement to celebrate progress and look at next steps for achieving the 2020 goals.

“With four years of work now behind us, the City has made significant strides towards reaching the targets in our Greenest City 2020 Action Plan,” said Mayor Gregor Robertson. “We’re proving that aggressive action on the environment supports a thriving economy, and we want to keep raising the bar — which is why we now have the ambitious goal to move to 100% renewable energy.”

Highlights in today’s Council update

  • The target to reduce the average distance driven per resident by 20% was surpassed, with a total reduction to date of 21%
  • 50% of trips in Vancouver are now made by foot, bicycle, and public transit
  • A total reduction in waste going to landfill or incinerator of 18%
  • An overall greenhouse gas emission reduction of 7% over 2007 levels, while Vancouver’s population grew and green economy flourished (3,200 new green jobs since 2010)

Renewed dedication to eliminate reliance on fossil fuels

“Being the Greenest City will continue for Vancouver beyond 2020. The goals in the original Greenest City 2020 Action Plan have always looked beyond 2020, and this spring we renewed our dedication to eliminate Vancouver’s reliance on fossil fuels,” said Mayor Robertson.

“The success of our Greenest City Plan has always been that it has engaged people throughout the City, and I encourage everyone to take part in Bright Green Summer and help us move closer to becoming the greenest city in the world,” said Mayor Robertson.
