City celebrates one millionth cycle trip across Burrard Bridge in 2015

August 20 2015

Bike counter at Burrard Bridge and Cornwall Avenue

Today, the City of Vancouver celebrates one million cycle trips across the Burrard Bridge so far this year with a celebration station located at Burrard Bridge and Cornwall Avenue.

The City revealed a bike counter at the Burrard Bridge and Cornwall intersection in January 2015.

The Burrard Bridge bike counter shows the year-to-date and daily counts of bicycles using the dedicated cycling lane. The counter is anticipated to roll over to reach the first one million trips across the bridge for 2015 sometime today.

Fifty per cent of all trips in the city are now taken by foot, bike, or public transit

Overall, the City has seen a continued year-over-year increase in the use of its bike lanes as more residents adapt to cycling, in part due to infrastructure built for people of all ages and abilities.

On Canada Day, Wednesday, July 1, 2015, the bike counters at both Burrard and Cornwall and Science World recorded record bike volumes.

The publicly visible bike counters recorded 8,200 cycle trips at Burrard and Cornwall, and 8,700 at Science World.

Cycle traffic over Burrard Bridge continues to increase. The weekend average in June rose from 4,200 trips in 2014 to 6,600 trips in 2015, and the weekday average rose from 5,500 trips in 2014 to 6,400 in 2015.

Visible bike counters normalize the use of bicycles for transportation in a fun, exciting way
