City’s crews out preparing roads for possible snow this weekend

February 7 2014

City of Vancouver crews are out today treating major bus routes and roads near hospitals and some schools with salt and sand in preparation for a possible snowfall on Sunday evening. Snow accumulations could be up to 10 centimetres, with temperatures rising by Monday afternoon, followed by rain.

How City crews are preparing for snow

The City takes snow removal seriously and will make consistent, coordinated efforts to keep main throughways clear, including bus routes, bridges, and arterials. Efforts will also be made to clear snow and slush from catch basins, sidewalks, intersections, and bus stops.

Help keep sidewalks clear of snow and ice and lend a hand

You play a large role in keeping Vancouver's sidewalks and storm drains clear. Snow and ice on the sidewalk can be a barrier for many people, particularly seniors and people with disabilities. When it snows, lend a hand to people in your neighbourhood who could use help shoveling their sidewalks. Call 3-1-1 if you have any questions or do not have access to someone who can help clear your sidewalks.

Clear sidewalks by 10:00am after a snowfall

All Vancouver property owners and occupants (tenants) are responsible for clearing snow and ice from the full width of sidewalks that surround their property by 10:00am on the morning following a snowfall. This responsibility is in effect seven days a week. Property owners and occupants who fail to remove snow and ice may be subject to fines. Please also help keep storm drains clear of leaves and snow to prevent flooding.

Take care when driving in snow

Go slow and make eye contact with pedestrians, drivers, and cyclists. If you don’t need to use a vehicle during a snowfall and can take transit instead, please consider doing so.

Report a problem on City property

To report problems on City property, please call 3-1-1.
