City full of colour and fun this weekend - Crews ask for public’s help with garbage

August 3 2012

The public can show their support for our streets, beaches and crews by putting their garbage and recycling in containers provided throughout the area.

It’s going to be a weekend full of colour in the skies when Italy performs the final show in the Honda Celebration of Light on Saturday night and rainbow-coloured fun at the Pride Parade on Sunday

City sanitation crews will be out in force all weekend with increased servicing of garbage and recycling containers throughout the West End and City beach areas.

By the time the clean-up is done on Sunday afternoon, City crews will have collected 160,000 kilograms of trash and recycling during the special events this week, an amount equal to the weight of nine fully loaded tour buses.

The public can show their support for our streets, beaches and crews by putting their garbage and recycling in containers provided throughout the area.

This year, City crews have added an additional 220 trash and recycling carts to West End streets, nearby beaches, the Stanley Park seawall and Spanish Banks beach.

Zero waste stations are proving successful for the recycling of materials. During the first night of the Celebration of Light, crews collected 106 kilograms of mixed paper, cardboard, food scraps and refundable containers.

It’s going to be a very heavy weekend for the army of sanitation crews, many of whom work unnoticed at night to clear the trash and return the beaches and streets to their clean and appealing condition for the first daylight users.

Following the Honda Celebration of Light Saturday night, eight pieces of heavy equipment and 16 staff will roll out to clean up the beaches and streets. Five pieces of equipment and 13 staff will sweep up following the Pride Parade.

<>Everyone can do their part by placing garbage and recycling in the provided containers. To further help people dispose of their trash, Park Board rangers will be distributing Keep Vancouver Spectacular garbage bags as they meet with fireworks fans on Saturday night.

Please pack your garbage out when you leave or place it in the bins provided.
