City honours 2012 Cultural Harmony Award winners

November 13 2012

The Cultural Harmony Awards recognize people and organizations who have made a significant, ongoing commitment to cultural understanding in Vancouver.

An orchestra that brings world music to local audiences and the co-founder of an Asian Canadian theatre company are the recipients of the City of Vancouver’s 2012 Cultural Harmony Awards.

Mayor Gregor Robertson presented the awards today to the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra and Joyce Lam of the Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre.

The Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra (VICO) received the award in the organization category for its commitment to sharing intercultural music and working with artists from diverse musical traditions. In addition to presenting new works from Canadian composers, VICO hosts an educational series that highlights music from around the world. It also sponsors a student composer program and performs concerts aimed at young audiences.

In the individual category, Joyce Lam, the co-founder and artistic director of the Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre (VACT), was recognized for her dedication to establishing a community of Asian Canadian theatre artists. Ms. Lam created VACT to showcase Asian Canadian actors and stories and foster their acceptance in mainstream theatre and the community at large.

The award recipients will also be honoured with trees planted in their names in the Cultural Harmony Grove located under the Burrard Bridge at a ceremony on 16 November at 2:00pm.

The Cultural Harmony Awards were established by the City of Vancouver in 1996 to recognize community members and organizations whose work results in a better understanding of our diverse communities and increases acceptance and positive relations between them. Recipients are chosen by an independent jury. The awards are sponsored by the City of Vancouver and the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation.
