The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) honoured the City of Vancouver as a Green Champion at its annual conference and trade show. The City was recognized in the municipal category of the “Best Green Building Policy”.

About the awards

The awards were announced this week at a ceremony in Niagara Falls, Ontario, where Councillor Andrea Reimer was on hand to accept the award on behalf of the City.
The awards were developed to promote municipal champions, inspire local governments and showcase and encourage the exchange of best practices among Canadian communities.

Green building practices

“Greener building practices are a central goal of Vancouver’s Greenest City 2020 Action Plan, and together we’ve been achieving remarkable progress,” said Mayor Gregor Robertson. “The award of Best Green Building Policy from the FCM is an honour for the City, our world-class green building industry and all Vancouver residents, and it represents important validation of our innovative work together to become the greenest city in the world.”

Past awards

The City’s Greenest City 2020 Action Plan establishes the goal of becoming the greenest city in the world by 2020, and its initiatives continue to gather worldwide acclaim. Vancouver won the 2014 Best Overall Policy in Global Leadership Award from the World Green Building Council. A strong vision for a sustainable future earned Vancouver four FCM Sustainable Communities Awards over the past 10 years, most recently in the 2014 transportation category for its Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Pilot Program.

Future plans for Greenest City

Future plans to advance the City’s Greenest City efforts include a comprehensive building retrofit strategy, a demolition and construction waste diversion plan, and continued expansion of the City’s organics diversion program to multi-unit residential buildings.
