Extended hours for this year’s patio season

March 20 2015

“This pilot will help us ensure we are creating lively streetscapes that contribute to our economy while considering impacts to surrounding neighbours,” said Mayor Gregor Robertson.

Restaurants with patios can now apply to keep their outdoor spaces open until 1:00am.

This additional hour builds on the success of last year’s patio pilot program which resulted in 115 restaurants keeping their patios open one hour later than usual.

Extended hours enlivens streets

“As locals know, and visitors fast come to appreciate, Vancouver summers are amazing. I’m pleased we can work together with our hospitality businesses to provide a fun, vibrant experience to patrons even later this year," said Mayor Gregor Robertson. “This pilot will help us ensure we are creating lively streetscapes that contribute to our economy while considering impacts to surrounding neighbours.”

We created a Patio Hours Extension Pilot Program to improve the patio experience for customers and enliven our streets. Through this program, restaurants were able to serve patio customers last year until 12 midnight daily – one hour later than normal.

Who can apply for the extension

Longer patio hours will run from Apri 1 to October 31. This year, small and large patios can apply to remain open until 1:00am — extended from 11:00pm in 2013, and 12 midnight in 2014.

Currently, 298 active large patios and 301 active small patios are eligible for the extension.

Businesses are required to have:

  • Up-to-date insurance
  • All fees paid in full
  • No patio noise related complaints on file in the last 12 months
