False Creek Flats planning workshop: A District defined by innovation – where industry and technology collide

This is the second in a series of six introductory workshops designed to help frame the conversations in the False Creek Flats planning process. These workshops will help identify the big questions that we need to address for a successful plan, as well as begin to brainstorm potential solutions to the challenges and opportunities in the area.

Workshop theme

Technological advancement and traditional industrial activities have often been placed at opposite ends of the economic spectrum.

In the False Creek Flats, however, exploration of new ways of working has begun to unlock innovative and creative business models that are improving traditional industries through the integration of new technologies.

Several conditions have primed the Flats for this type of economic activity, including:

  • The area's direct connection to the region's rapid transit network
  • The high density residential neighbourhoods that surround it
  • The various educational institutions that call the Flats home, like the Centre for Digital Media (a collaborative creation of UBC, SFU, BCIT, and Emily Carr University), as well as the future home of the Emily Carr University of Arts and Design.

So with the roots of innovation already firmly entrenched in the Flats:

  • How then can we best harness this energy and further advance this area towards a thriving and innovative future?
  • What does a truly innovative district look like?
  • What are the physical and regulatory conditions that make an area conducive to innovation, exploration, and experimentation?
  • How might this plan contribute to the development of innovative businesses and business models in the Flats?
  • What opportunities are there for innovation with the arrival of a new St. Paul's hospital?
  • Where is the greatest opportunity for the False Creek Flats to contribute to Vancouver's international reputation as a City for innovative, creative, and sustainable business?
