Heavy rains, high winds forecast for Vancouver and region

October 12 2016

Flooding streets can cause problems for drivers

In preparation for heavy rainfall and high winds forecasted for the region starting late Wednesday, residents are encouraged to do their part by clearing leaves and debris near catch basins and sewer drains in their neighbourhood to reduce the risk of flooding in homes, businesses, properties, and public areas.

Leaves can be added to the Green Bin until it is full. Leaves that do not fit in the Green Bin should be stored in a dry area and added to the Green Bin again once it is emptied.

Tips to prevent flooding at home

Here are a few things you can do in advance of storms to help prevent flooding:

  • Seal cracks or openings in walls, floors, windows and foundations, and seal all window wells.
  • Clear eaves-troughs and downspouts of leaves and other debris that prevent proper drainage.
  • Ensure the grading around your home slopes away from the foundation wall to help drain water away from your home (without negatively affecting neighbouring properties).
  • Ensure that your plumbing and drainage systems are in good working condition. Homeowners are responsible for the plumbing from the property line to inside the home.

Our crews are doing preventative maintenance including clearing catch basins and sewer drains in problem areas starting today. We will assess the forecast throughout the week and will dispatch additional crews where and when required.
