Lounge on a Robson Street porch this summer

March 18 2015 VIVA Vancouver to install “Porch Parade” on 800 Robson Street

Porch design on Robson Square

For the first time in VIVA Vancouver's five year run, the summer public space installation at 800 Robson Street will be created by designers and architects from outside of Vancouver.

This year, 81 submissions were reviewed by a jury, who considered:

  • Creativity
  • Design originality
  • Feasibility
  • This year’s theme of “connection”

Winning design

The Robson Redux Design-Build winner, as selected by a blind jury review, is “Porch Parade”, an ad hoc arrangement of front porches in vibrant colours. The project is the creation of Chicago-based architectural design company Design With, made up of architects Stewart Hicks and Allison Newmeyer.

"Porch Parade" will be installed on July 1 on 800 Robson Street and will remain in place until Labour Day.

The design features a collection of porches that at first appears abstract, but when full of visitors, will be a lively and familiar atmosphere for downtown Vancouver.

A design honorarium and up to $40,000 will cover costs of materials, fabrication, construction, installation, and de-installation.

The People’s Choice award went to “#ICU”, a series of seating and windows that project images from one perspective to another, all inspired by the periscope. The design was created by local recent graduates of the University of British Columbia.

About the design competition
