Park Board chair disappointed in Vancouver Council decision to remove elected commissioner from PNE Board

June 11 2015

Park Board Chair John Coupar

Vancouver Park Board Chair John Coupar says that the Vancouver Council vote on June 10, 2015, to remove the elected Park Board commissioner’s seat on the PNE Board is a blow to Park Board oversight of Hastings Park/PNE, the City’s second largest park.

“The lack of elected Park Board oversight for one of the City’s pre-eminent parks represents a huge step backward,” said Park Board Chair John Coupar on Monday afternoon.  “It’s called a park for a reason.”

On Wednesday, a majority of Vancouver City Council voted to amend the governance of Hastings Park/PNE after a staff report recommended an update of bylaws written in 1995 to “align with the Business Corporations Act of BC and to assist the new Board in the management and affairs of the PNE and Hastings Park.”

Chair Coupar told City Council Wednesday that Park Board Commissioners passed a unanimous motion on June 8 in opposition to the elimination of a Park Board commissioner from the PNE Board.
