Park Board statement on Vancouver Police Department charges

September 6 2012

The Vancouver Park Board has just become aware of the Vancouver Police Department’s charges against a former lifeguard for historic incidents that are alleged to have occurred during the 1970s and 1980s while the lifeguard was employed with the Park Board.

The charges are very troubling and our thoughts are with individuals who may have been harmed by the individual.

Park Board staff will fully assist VPD with whatever they need to conduct their investigation.

The Park Board currently has a comprehensive program of policies, practices and monitoring to protect the safety of children and at-risk persons participating in recreation programs.

In addition, pre-employment criminal record checks are conducted for all individuals employed with the City in a position of trust or that work with children or vulnerable adults.

Given the police investigation now underway, Park Board staff will not be commenting further on this matter.
