Vancouver Park Board lifeguards

The Vancouver Park Board’s 78th annual Lifeguard School, which provides lifeguard certification and recertification, begins January 7, 2014.

The school offers comprehensive training at the Vancouver Aquatic Centre for prospective and returning lifeguards interested in employment at Vancouver’s 11 beaches and indoor and outdoor pools. The training also qualifies participants to lifeguard anywhere in Canada.

In order to attend Lifeguard School, students must have already obtained the Bronze Cross, which can be obtained at most city pools. Lifeguard School offers Standard First Aid (or Aquatic Emergency Care) and CPR—prerequisites for National Lifeguard certification, which is also offered and is required to work at Park Board pools and beaches.

The school also offers a Lifeguard Public Relations Seminar, providing communications and other skills on dealing with the public.

British Columbia and Yukon high school students can use certifications for credit toward high school graduation.
