The First Tee gets permanent home at Vancouver pitch and putt

May 26 2014

Rupert Park Pitch and Putt

A unique program that uses golf to teach youth core values such as perseverance, respect, and honesty has found a new home at an East Vancouver golf course.

The First Tee is delivered by the YMCA of Greater Vancouver and will operate out of the Vancouver Park Board’s Rupert Park Pitch and Putt.

Kids learn golf and core values in life

Through the game of golf, youth ages 7 to 17 learn the fundamental skills of the game, as well as life-enhancing values. Classes led by qualified First Tee coaches help kids learn nine core values: honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy, and judgment. Values like these transfer to other aspects of life and help each young person achieve success in school, friendships, and – eventually – in the workforce and their own families.

Established by the World Golf Foundation in 1997 as a not for-profit organization, The First Tee has more than 200 chapters in the United States. The PGA and LPGA tours, United States Golf Association, PGA of America, and the Masters Golf Tournament are among the organization's founding partners.

1,000 children enrolled in Vancouver chapter

The YMCA of Greater Vancouver chapter is one of four First Tee chapters outside the USA. It began its first full year of operation in 2011 and this year will have almost 1,000 children go through its programs.

The Park Board offers the use of practice facilities at Rupert Park and Queen Elizabeth pitch and putt courses, and Fraserview Golf Course. A variety of programs are available, including week-long summer camps and after-school programs. Financial assistance is available for children whose families can't afford the fees.
