Traffic changes on Point Grey Road start this weekend

January 16 2014

Point Grey Road - Cornwall Avenue Corridor

Point Grey Road between Macdonald Street and Alma Street will be permanently closed to commuter traffic starting on Saturday, January 18, 2014, at 7:00am.

What to expect

Motorists travelling through the area to another neighbourhood are advised to plan an alternate route. Access to local destinations will be maintained. Full access to businesses and services along Cornwall Avenue, York Street, Yew Street, 1st Avenue, and Point Grey Road will be maintained and remain open as usual.

During construction, motorists travelling along Point Grey Road between Macdonald Street and Trafalgar Street can expect traffic changes, lane restrictions, and intermittent delays. Cyclists should also expect delays and/or detours during this construction period. We will work to minimize delays as much as possible.

Why we are doing this work

This work will complete the Seaside Greenway, a continuous 28 km path for people who walk and cycle that starts at Vancouver Convention Centre and will end at Spanish Banks Beach. The Seaside Greenway spans around Coal Harbour, Stanley Park, English Bay, False Creek, Kitsilano, Jericho Beach, and Spanish Banks.

The improvements will:

  • Enhance safety for all road users by reducing the speed and volume of vehicles along Point Grey Road.
  • Provide a safe, convenient and comfortable walking and cycling connection between Burrard Bridge and Jericho Beach for people of all ages and abilities.
  • Provide better access for everyone to the many parks located along this stretch of Point Grey Road.

This construction is being coordinated with work underway at the intersection of Burrard Street and Cornwall Avenue as part of the Burrard Bridge Improvement Project. The most significant traffic changes in the area took place in September at the Burrard Street and Cornwall Avenue intersection.
