Update on the reoccupation of supportive housing at 1335 Howe Street (former Quality Inn)

September 3 2015

1335 Howe Street

Following storm-related repairs and restoration of power systems, the tenants of 1335 Howe Street will be moving back home today.

The relocation of residents to three temporary shelters in the Downtown South area was required on August 31 due to a flood and power outage at the building.

City staff and contractors have been working over the past two days on the flood and electrical damage at this interim housing facility operated by Community Builders Foundation.

City and Community Builders staff will be assisting the tenants in moving back to the building, now that City permits have been issued and the fire chief has approved occupancy.

Temporary generator to supply power during BC Hydro repairs

The City and BC Hydro are in the process of replacing the damaged transformers – this work is ongoing.

In the meantime, a second temporary generator has been installed to restore power to the whole facility, including life safety systems.

As the temporary generator operates at 66 decibels (allowable to the day limit of 70, but slightly exceeding the evening limit of 65) a Noise Bylaw exemption is being issued for this site and a notification will be sent to residents in the area.

Support for returning residents

Staff will be assisting tenants in moving back starting at 10:00am today.

Parking in the area may be restricted to facilitate the seamless transfer of tenants.

Tenants will be provided with food from the food bank to replace perishables lost in the power outage and lunch will be served as they arrive.

As part of the process of transitioning residents back to their homes, Vancouver Coastal Health will assist in assessing tenant health needs to ensure appropriate supports.

We request that media and local residents please respect the privacy of tenants while moving and reintegrating back to the building.
