Adventuring in Vancouver this summer? Use the “Pack it in, Pack it out” method for a chance to win prizes!

July 29 2017

“When you come out to enjoy events at our amazing beaches, parks, and plazas treat it like a hike: if you pack in a picnic or snack, pack up all of your items and bring them home to be reused or properly sorted for recycling,” says Albert Shamess

With hot and sunny weather continuing and some of summer’s biggest events on the horizon, the City of Vancouver is encouraging residents to show their love for their city by not letting containers, cups, and food wrapping become litter.

How to enter

Use the “pack it in, pack it out” method when coming in to downtown and share the photo to enter yourself into a draw for a chance to win a Water Bike pass and cool down!

The City has partnered with the Park Board on a number of prizes to encourage residents and visitors to make this weekend’s fireworks and other summer events a litter free, zero waste adventure.

To enter, share photos of you or your group using our tips below to Twitter or Instagram. Entries must include #zerowaste2040.

Help keep Vancouver clean and green

Tips to help keep Vancouver clean and green during big events:

  • Use the “Pack-it-in/Pack-it-out” method to take home and recycle items
  • Bring a reusable water bottle, cup or take-out container to enjoy all of your favourite snacks
  • Use the zero waste stations recycling and waste receptacles present throughout downtown
  • If you see litter on the street, consider picking it up and placing it in a container

Treat your adventure like a hike

“When you come out to enjoy events at our amazing beaches, parks, and plazas treat it like a hike: if you pack in a picnic or snack, pack up all of your items and bring them home to be reused or properly sorted for recycling,” says Albert Shamess, the City’s director of Zero Waste and Resource Recovery. “The steps residents and visitors take to reduce, reuse, and recycle their items while adventuring in Vancouver helps to keep our city litter-free and supports faster event cleanups – which is especially helpful when events occur back to back.”

How the City prepares for events

During large events, such as the Honda Celebration of Lights taking place on July 29, August 2, and August 5, the City increases the number of sanitation staff to help with cleanup.

To prepare for events, City crews also do a pre-cleaning of the event area which includes emptying litter cans and carts on the seawall, litter pickup and street sweeping along the seawall, Davie Street, Denman Street, and Beach Avenue.

Single use items, such as disposable cups and take-out containers make up nearly 50% of all items collected from public waste bins and often end up as litter in our parks, green spaces and streets.

Bring your reusable cup or container with you

In Vancouver alone, 2.6 million disposable cups are thrown in the trash each week. By bringing a reusable cup or container, or taking disposables home to recycle in your blue box, you can significantly reduce the amount of litter and recyclables that end up on Vancouver streets.

By properly disposing of waste in the receptacles provided or by using the Pack it in, Pack it out method, we can all help to reduce waste and keep Vancouver’s parks, green spaces, and streets vibrant and clean for everyone to enjoy
