Donation campaign for refugees

As part of welcoming efforts to help resettle Syrian refugees in Vancouver and other communities, the City is pleased to support the Vancity Humanitarian Fund.

The campaign encourages the public, businesses and other organizations and agencies to consider making a donation to the Vancity Humanitarian Fund to support Syrian Refugees coming to BC.

Support from the Mayor

To help support the campaign, Mayor Gregor Robertson and Tamara Vrooman, President and CEO of Vancity, each made personal donations to the Vancity Humanitarian Fund, and issued a challenge to other Lower Mainland mayors and business leaders across BC to make a similar contribution.

The two also urged people to consider offering housing or employment to incoming refugees, or volunteering as a settlement host.

From December 1 onwards, contributions to the Vancity Humanitarian Fund are being designated to local charities that help refugees settle in our communities.

More about the Vancity Humanitarian Fund

The Vancity Humanitarian Fund was established in September in response to the refugee crisis and to provide ongoing support for this and other humanitarian issues. Funds collected before December 1 are being distributed to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), and were matched by the federal government through contributions to its own Syrian Emergency Relief Fund.

Vancity is matching all donations to the Vancity Humanitarian Fund up to a maximum of $125,000.
