Vancouver becoming premier sport-hosting destination

March 8 2017 Over $86 million in economic benefits from sports hosting in 2016-2019

Today City staff provided a progress update  to Council reinforcing Vancouver’s position as a world-class sport-hosting destination. Staff outlined estimated economic impacts totaling $73 million projected to come from hosting the:

  • 2017 Canada Sevens this weekend
  • National Skating Championships
  • ISU Grand Prix Final in 2018
  • IIHF World Junior Championships in 2019

Our international sport reputation continues to grow stronger since hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics. Recent successful events include the:

  • FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015
  • Inaugural Canada Sevens Rugby event
  • Americas Masters Games in 2016

Recognized at Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance’s PRESTIGE Awards

Our work is also being recognized at the 11th annual Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance’s PRESTIGE Awards  on March 21 in Ottawa where Sport Hosting Vancouver is a finalist in the category of Sport Tourism Organization of the Year. Vancouver had a record-breaking tourism year  in 2016 with over 10 million visitors to the city. Sport Hosting was a large contributor with key events like the Canada Sevens hosted in March attracting 60,000 attendees, and the sold out men’s soccer match between Canada and Mexico.

We have partnered with Tourism Vancouver, Hotel Destination Association, BC Pavilion Corporation, and the University of British Columbia to form Sport Hosting Vancouver.
