Vancouver FIFA Fan Zone attracts over 130,000 visitors

Vancouver’s FIFA Fan Zone attracted over 130,000 attendees over the course of the 13 days it was open during the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015TM Tournament, making it the most popular destination of the six Fan Zone sites across the country.

This, according to FIFA’s media announcement on “Key figures from the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015” released today.

Fan Zone hosted special visitors

Over the 13 days it was open, the Fan Zone welcomed a range of special visitors, including:

  • Current and former professional female soccer players
  • Pop stars
  • Elected officials
  • Dr. Jill Biden, wife of United States Vice-President Joe Biden
  • The Mayor of Yokohama

Areas and countries represented at the Fan Zone

Random surveying of over 1,350 Vancouver FIFA Fan Zone attendees conducted over three days indicated that the majority of visitors (55%) on those days were from British Columbia. Of the Lower Mainland visitors, Vancouverites represented nearly half of the attendees.

Forty-two per cent of attendees came from outside Canada. Over 36% of those were from the US and of those, over 11%  from Washington State.

  • Germany
  • Australia
  • Turkey
  • France
  • Japan
  • Mexico
  • Hong Kong
  • Israel
  • Venezuela

Survey days were June 27, June 30, and July 5.

Tournament's tourism impact

  • Nearly 80% of out-of-town visitors surveyed on the three days indicated they were staying overnight with almost 18% staying for longer than seven days.
  • 60% of those surveyed were staying in hotel accommodations.
  • Over 47% of respondents surveyed planned to spend between $100 and $750 dollars on recreational activities.
  • 52% surveyed planned to spend between $100 and $750 dollars in restaurants and bars.

Other notable stats from the survey include:

  • 95% of respondents will recommend Vancouver as a travel destination.
  • 76% took public transit, walked or biked to the Fan Zone.
  • 84% of attendees ranked their Fan Zone experience as good or excellent

The FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™ took place from June 6 to July 5 in:

  • Edmonton
  • Winnipeg
  • Ottawa
  • Montreal
  • Moncton
  • Vancouver

The Vancouver FIFA Fan Zone was open on June 6, 8, 11, 12, 15, 16, 21, 23, 27, and 30; and July 1, 4, and 5.
