Work of independent election task force under way

On Thursday, June 2, an independent election task force made up of 12 Vancouver citizens started their work to improve public confidence in electoral processes at the municipal level with a key goal to increase voter turnout to at least 60% by 2025.

Originating from a motion of Council in February 2015, and formally approved by Council in January 2016, the purpose of the Independent Election Task Force is to:

  1. Recommend changes to Council concerning the delivery of municipal elections in the City of Vancouver
  2. Create a plan for advancing previous Council directives to staff regarding electoral procedures currently under Provincial control including campaign finance reform

The Task Force is directed to produce a final report for consideration by Council in December 2016.

Members of the task force

The 12 members reflect the diversity of the city and bring with them an impressive range of community advocating, academic, and professional experiences.

Members include:

  • Former chair of Fair Vote Canada
  • President of Fair Voting BC
  • Co-founder of Unlock Democracy
  • Co-founder of Turn Up YVR
  • A member of the Fresh Voices Youth Advisory Team
  • A member who was motivated to join in honour of her father who was denied the vote through the Chinese Exclusion Act

Requirements 

The members had to meet the following requirements in being appointed:

  • Strong knowledge of the principles of democracy, effective operation of democratic institutions, and best practices regarding electoral systems and reform
  • Experience in developing strategies and work plans and achieving success within a political environment
  • Knowledge of the organization and operation of key provincial ministries
  • No affiliation with a political party in the City of Vancouver for the past four elections and not a City of Vancouver municipal candidate in any of the past four elections
