July 2010
Hello!
welcome
As
Vancouver heats up this summer, we’re suggesting some low-carbon ways
to keep your cool at home. We’re also asking you to “talk green
to us” about how Vancouver can become the greenest city in the world by
2020.
One Day
is a City of Vancouver initiative that encourages residents to take
small actions in their daily lives to use less energy at home and on
the move, to help protect the climate, and to make Vancouver the
cleanest, greenest, healthiest city in the world.
actions this month
Imagine 2020. In just ten years, Vancouver will be the greenest city in the world.
Here’s how you can help us get there:
1. Watch the video explaining Greenest City’s 10 goals. 2. Check out the ideas on how to reach these goals and vote for your favourite. Everyone has 20 votes! 3. Share your new idea.
Quite simply, talk green to us... we're
listening.
Cool as a cucumber
Here are some ideas on how to keep the heat out of your home this summer.
• Shade your windows. Using internal blinds and drapes can block up to 65 per cent of the heat that would otherwise come in through your windows. • Plant a deciduous shade tree.
Well-designed landscaping can help minimize the amount of heat your
home gains in the summer. Also refer to our new landscaping
guide. • Add or upgrade insulation and draft proof your home. These are important year round! Refer to the LiveSmart incentives to find out how you can get rebates for this action. • Install a ceiling fan. They are energy-efficient ways to cool your home in the summer and circulate warm air in the winter. • You can also minimize indoor heat generation by cooking less. Take advantage of the wonderful
summer produce at your local markets and eat fresh
One Day wonders
This month’s wonders are the leaders and kids at FUN Camps Vancouver,
a hands-on environmental leadership day camp run out of the Graduate
Student Centre at UBC. These kids are having an eco-friendly
blast making new friends and learning to live with less impact on the
earth.
Some
of the sustainable adventures these “campers” will embark on are
building and racing a mini-solar car, cooling off at the UBC pool,
warming brownies in a solar oven, growing food and creating a
mini-sustainable city out of recycled materials! Congrats to the
leaders, parents and kids for finding sustainable ways to enjoy their
holidays.
