One Day
march 2010

Hello!

welcome

Now that we’ve successfully cheered on our country’s best athletes to win the most gold metals in the history of the Olympic Winter Games, let’s see if Canadians can also take the lead in rooting for our planet during 2010 Earth Hour.

This month’s issue is not only about Earth Hour and how you can participate, but contains great news about useful tools that you can use to make your home more energy efficient.

One Day is a City of Vancouver initiative that encourages residents to take small actions in their daily lives to use less energy at home and on the move, to help protect the climate, and to make Vancouver the cleanest, greenest, healthiest city in the world.

actions of the month

Turn ‘em off!

Mark 2010 Earth Hour on your calendar.  At 8:30pm on the last Saturday of this month (March 27) hundreds of millions of people around the world will turn off their lights for an hour to demand action on climate change.  Whether you choose to participate by having a candlelit dinner with friends, playing board games with your kids or making a romantic evening for your sweetheart – we want you to participate.  Watch the Earth Hour official video and Canadian commercial.

Earth Hour is just the beginning. Every hour, Canadians are taking small steps to lessen their impact on the environment.  Visit WWF’s website to find out more.

Take a tour!

Green building audio tours are audio guides to some of Vancouver’s greenest buildings. The architect, or member of the design team, will guide you through a three-minute, recorded virtual ‘tour’ of the building’s design features. Online or over the phone, you can explore the Olympic Centre at Hillcrest Park, the Convention Centre, and some of the buildings in the Olympic Village (recently named the greenest neighbourhood in the world!), to name a few.

Live smart again

We have great news for those who missed out on the LiveSmart BC: Efficiency Incentive Program last August when funding ended.  The 2010 BC Provincial Budget includes $35 million in new funding over three years for LiveSmart. The  provincial government is finalizing details of the new version of LiveSmart, one of our favourite programs.  If similar to its predecessor, you’ll soon be able to insulate, weatherstrip, and caulk your way to substantial rebates.  Stay tuned to One Day’s website; we will be posting details online as they are announced.

Note:  There will be no change for those currently in the existing LiveSmart Program.  If you’ve had your pre-retrofit home energy assessment prior to August 15, 2009, and you complete your post-retrofit home energy assessment within 18 months after your first assessment, your incentives will not change.

One Day wonders

There’s a new app in town.  Green Zebra, local savings for sustainable living, has been selected for a beta test of a mobile coupon technology.  Free to download, the Find Green search app is “live” in hundreds of cities across North America.  For visitors already accustomed to using Find Green, Green Zebra’s coupons are a bonus that is unique to Metro Vancouver. The best part, you’ll never forget your coupons again.

Our other wonders are those creative types who are participating in the Earth Hour Every Hour contest.  For fun, you can watch and vote for your favourite video or photo essay until March 25, 2010.  We wish these sustainability champions luck as they compete for one of four weekly prizes and the grand prize - a trip for two to see polar bears in Churchill, Manitoba.
