October 2010
Hello!
welcome
Although
there is a little something here for everyone, for this month’s enews
we’re turning our attention to Vancouver’s business community and
homeowners to encourage them to save energy.
One Day
is a City of Vancouver initiative that encourages residents to take
small actions in their daily lives to use less energy at home and on
the move, to help protect the climate, and to make Vancouver the
cleanest, greenest, healthiest city in the world.

conservation assistance
BC Hydro’s Energy Conservation Assistance Program
helps homeowners with higher electricity consumption who may not be
able to afford to make their homes more energy efficient. Qualified
applicants can receive a free home energy evaluation and energy
efficiency upgrades, helping them reduce their consumption and save
money.
Also available, free BC Hydro Energy Savings Kits
to all low-income households. This free kit offers a variety of simple
ways to help you save energy. The tools in the kit will increase the
comfort of your home and reduce your energy bill.
in your city
We
need the help of local businesses to achieve Vancouver's ambitious GHG
targets and to become the greenest city in the world by 2020. We are
calling all businesses to show their leadership by joinning the City's Corporate Climate Leaders Program.
To participate, businesses need to complete a greenhouse gas inventory,
commit to a target, and then report back on their progress within 18
months.
Tell your drycleaner, hairdresser, or favourite corner store that you hope they'll become a climate leader!
Energy labels for houses
When shopping for a vehicle or an appliance, consumers can compare the energy efficiency of different models. Join the list of supporters
who want to make this type of information mandatory at the time of sale
of a home --- allowing home-buyers to compare the energy efficiency of
different houses. Home energy labeling at the time of sale can
have significant economic, social and environmental benefits for the
Province of BC.
Worried about the
EnerGuide rating for your home? Don’t forget that up to $4,515 is
still available for your home energy improvements through the LiveSmart BC: Efficiency Incentive Program, now until March 31, 2011.
One Day wonders
This month we would like to recognize Haro Park Centre Society,
a non-profit senior complex care facility in the West End. By
implementing green initiatives, such as re-commissioning their
building, lighting upgrades, and adjusting their maintenance to fit
Vancouver’s climate, this building has been able to achieve a 25%
reduction in gas usage, a 50% reduction in water usage and a 4%
reduction in electricity usage. This equates to approximately
$35,000 in utilities savings each year.
“By
implementing good engineering practice and progressive maintenance, our
facility was able to reduce our carbon footprint by 110 tons annually
since 2005,” said Vitaly Lioznyansky, the director of
maintenance. Thanks Vitaly for helping Vancouver progress towards
the greenest city in the world by 2020.
