One Day

March 2009

Hello!

welcome

In this issue, we are shining our energy efficient spotlight on Earth Hour. We hope you will get as enthusiastic as we are about shutting off lights city-wide! This year's Earth Hour has the potential of being the biggest climate change event Vancouver has ever seen.

One Day is a City of Vancouver initiative that encourages residents to take small actions in their daily lives to use less energy at home and on the move, to help protect the climate, and to make Vancouver the cleanest, greenest, healthiest city in the world.

One Day Actions of the Month

Sign-up for Earth Hour
Join millions of Canadians and turn your lights off on March 28 at 8:30pm in support of action on climate change. Make sure to sign-up so Earth Hour can track your participation.  You’ll also be entered to win a trip to see the polar bears in Churchill, Manitoba. Download a poster and put it up in your apartment building or school. Tell all of your friends and family about it and have a candlelight party.

Turning off lights for an hour won’t stop climate change but it does demonstrate that small individual actions can add up to big change. In December 2009, world leaders will meet in Copenhagen to establish an international agreement for controlling greenhouse gases. Earth Hour is about sending them a message that we want to see action.

Share Earth Hour with your kiddies
Do you have any little ones in your life?  WWF has built a kid’s webpage to help your child connect to this global event.  If you’re a teacher, they even have lesson plans available.

Earth Hour is also about thinking about other small actions you can take daily. You can do a lot in One Day.

Are you a Facebook-er?

Become a fan on Earth Hour’s Facebook page.  There, you will find their official count down clock, photos of last year’s event from around the world, as well as videos, including a 2008 commercial by Canada’s own Nelly Furtado. Post your plans for March 28 on their wall.

One Day Wonders

Craig, the senior associate with Communica Public Affairs in Vancouver, is a busy guy. He is also passionate about Earth Hour and the potential this event has to spark change, so he is using his people skills and contacts to promote Earth Hour to the Vancouver business community.

Craig is volunteering a half hour per day to promote the initiative to other businesses by calling restaurants, property managers, and industry associations; and contacting business owners who have buildings with decorative lighting to get them to commit and sign-up. The list of people he's got on board just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Thank you Craig.

This month’s other wonders are all the amazing students who entered the Invent the Future Contest and shared their creative ideas on energy conservation. Watch one of 50 impressive video clips submitted by BC students.  We would like a ”special congratulations” to go out to Sacha for his grand prize video Bike Powered School, and Cameron for his grand prize essay A Family Affair, “The Bill of Rights”.

Here are a couple of updates from past e-news articles:

We have often referred to the LiveSmart BC program.  This month we want to share the latest figures.
  • As of February 2009, 2,713 rebates have been issued in BC totaling $6 million, which includes $3.5 million in provincial incentives and $2.5 million in federal incentives.
  • Due to the additional LiveSmart BC rebates, British Columbians' rebate cheques are 239% higher, on average, than those of other Canadians.
  • With the improvements these homeowners have made, their heating bills will be reduced by 15 to 75%.
  • Each household will produce 2.5 fewer tonnes of GHGs per year, adding up to a province-wide reduction of almost 6,800 tonnes.
  • So far, 1,990 Vancouver families have had an energy audit done.
February’s issue referred to the fate of analog TVs due to broadcasting changes.  Here are a few more details:  Canadian broadcasters will make the switch by August 31, 2011, and American broadcasters by June 12, 2009. For those close to the border who receive over-the-air television from the US, you’ll be affected by the US transition date.  Find the full details here
